One of the first questions almost every client asks is: “What should I wear for my boudoir session?” The truth is, the right wardrobe can completely transform the look and feel of your images. It’s not about having the most expensive lingerie, it’s about choosing pieces that flatter your body, photograph beautifully in my studio, and make you feel confident the moment you put them on.
This guide will walk you through exactly what to wear for boudoir photography; including colors, lingerie styles, accessories, and what to avoid so you’ll feel fully prepared and excited for your shoot.

The Best Colors for Boudoir Photography
In my studio, certain shades always photograph beautifully:
- Darker colors – black, deep navy, burgundy.
- Jewel tones – emerald green, sapphire blue, ruby red.
- Muted tones – soft blush, champagne, mocha.
- Creams and whites – timeless, elegant, and flattering.
- Reds – bold and sensual, perfect for statement images.
Pro Tip: Avoid neon colors! They don’t photograph well and can distract from your natural beauty.

Lingerie Styles That Always Work
Some lingerie cuts are more flattering and versatile in boudoir photography. My top recommendations:
- Bra & panty sets – a classic that never fails.
- Bodysuits – slimming, elongating, and easy to pose in.
- Teddies – feminine, playful, and curve-hugging.
- Sheer tank tops – casual, flirty, and perfect for layering.
- Sheets / implied nude – tasteful, artistic, and sultry.
- Nude looks – nothing but confidence and strategic posing.
Pro Tip: Look for high-cut pieces on the leg! They elongate and flatter in photos.

Accessories That Elevate Your Look
The right accessories add variety and drama to your images:
- Stockings & garter belts
- Fishnets
- Body chains or jewelry that drapes beautifully
- Neckpieces or chokers
Pro Tip: Less is more. Avoid overloading with chunky jewelry, the focus should be on you.

Footwear: Go High or Go Barefoot
- Sky-high stilettos (4.5 inches or higher) work beautifully for lengthening legs.
- My studio closet has plenty of options if you don’t have a pair.
- Barefoot also photographs beautifully for a more natural, intimate look.
Avoid: chunky heels or shoes with ankle straps, which can cut the line of your legs in photos.

What to Avoid Wearing
Some pieces just don’t translate well on camera:
- Neon lingerie
- Babydolls or anything too flowy/baggy
- Corsets/bustiers (unless custom-tailored)
- Full-coverage panties or cheekies (too much fabric flattens the light)
- Chunky shoes or distracting ankle straps
- Excessive jewelry
